If there was ever a team to be a major buzz kill to the Memphis Grizzlies that team would be the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs always find a way to ruin a good time here at FedEx Forum. The Grizzlies would fall to the Spurs 102-86.
The Spurs snapped the Grizzlies’ season-high four-game winning streak. Tony Parker scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter improving the Spurs 8-0 this season when leading after three-quarters. Once again buzz kill.
“Obviously they have our number…Six straight games they can beat us” Tony Allen said on the loss.
The more startling news is Marc Gasol would leave the game in the 2nd Quarter with a left knee sprain and the Spurs went on a 21-10 run to end the half with a 51-37 lead. Gasol’s MRI will be tomorrow so Grizzlies fans need to pray constantly that it is not too serious.
The Grizzlies were able to make it close game in the 3rd Quarter but once again the Spurs became the buzz kills of the NBA. Up 79-78 with 6:37 left in the fourth quarter, the Spurs closed the game with a 23-8 run. San Antonio made seven of their eight field goal attempts in the final 5:06 of the game, turning a seven-point lead (85-78) into a 16-point victory.
San Antonio showed once again how well of a phenomenal team they are. Great shooters from the outside, deep bench, great decision makers, and as always clutch. The Spurs outscored Memphis 31-21 in the fourth quarter, shooting 11-of-18 FG (.611) to the Grizzlies 7-of-21 FG (.333).
“They are incredibly smart. They have a lot of shooters, so they spread you out” Coach Dave Joerger said after the game.
This was a game that showed that the Grizzlies need some serious help shooting beyond the arc. Memphis would shoot 27% from 3-point range. Two of those 3 pointers would be from Mike Conley.
Conley would be the MVP for the Grizzlies tonight as he finished with 28 points on 12-of-19 shooting. This would be Conley’s sixth game of the season with 20 or more points.
Kosta Koufos would play for Gasol the rest of the game and had some very productive minutes for the team. This is a guy that understands his role on this team and is ready to perform whenever his name is called.
“I just want Marc (Gasol) to be healthy. I’ve learned a lot from Marc and Zach (Randolph), and whatever it takes to win. Whenever I play I’m just going to play hard like I have been my whole career, and just learn from it and try to carry the team as best as I can” Koufos said after the game.
This is a loss that Grizzlies fans shouldn’t get too upset about. You know how well this Spurs team is. They are a very well structured team with very few flaws. Let’s be thankful that the front office made the trade to bring Kosta Koufos to this team.
Now the Grizzlies must get ready for the Houston Rockets who are playing very well with center Dwight Howard, who is leading the league in rebounds with 13.7. This Rockets team does a very good job at spreading the floor with great shooters like James Harden, Chandler Parsons, and Jeremy Lin and the Grizzlies can not let one of the guys get hot Monday. Let’s hope the Grizzlies can fix their problems soon and hope Gasol has a safe and speedy recovery. Believe Memphis.
