It wasn’t pretty but the Memphis Grizzlies pulled off another nail bitter win against the Boston Celtics 95-88. Down 80-74 with 7:16 left in the game, Memphis closed the 4th quarter on a 21-8 run to earn the victory. Jerryd Bayless was a major contributor to last night’s win as he would pour in 15 points (6-of-7 FG) in the final quarter to bring the Grizzlies a victory. Mike Conley and Zach Randolph would also finish the night with 15 points for the Grizzlies.
“We’re building we’re going in the right direction I know there are some trends that are alarming but I think we are going to be OK” Coach Dave Joerger after the win.
Memphis shot .667 from the field in the fourth quarter and .576 for the second half. Memphis held Boston to .412 shooting (14-of-34 FG) in the second half after allowing the Celtics to shoot .528 (19-of-36 FG) in the first half.
Tony Allen would go and have another great defensive performance as he would end the night with 8 rebounds and 4 steals. “Tony Allen is a heck of a player. I knew that coming in and I’m even more impressed leaving” Boston Celtics Head Coach Brad Stevens on Allen’s performance. This performance by Allen last night would put him as one of the league’s leaders in steals so far this season.
After only having two points in the first half, Marc Gasol got back in Marc Gasol form in the second half. Marc woudld finish the night having 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Jeff Green led the Celtics in scoring for the second time this season, tallying 22 points (6-of-9 FG). Sixteen of Green’s points came in the first half.
The concern I do agree with fans around Grizz Nation is the performance lately of Ed Davis. In playing 7:43, he had a sloppy 4 points and 3 rebounds. Davis did not become a big help on the defensive side with bad turnovers and dumb fouls. Now you bring up a debate of who should be the backup power forward for the Grizzlies between Jon Leuer and Ed Davis.
I’ve been a big supporter of Leuer ever since he came to Memphis last season. He brings so much energy to this team whenever he is on the floor. Even the stats show Leuer needs to play. The Grizzlies FG% when Leuer is on the court is 66.7% and with Ed Davis it is 38.3%.
“I know the guy is safe. I know he executes, I know he rebounds, I know he doesn’t turn the ball over rarely. I’m very safe with Jon Leuer” Coach Joerger said on Leuer’s performance last night.
Last night’s win still bring up major concerns for many Grizzlies fans. But do fans really need to start putting on twitter “Bring back Lionel”? Absolutely not. Just remember that Lionel Hollins team had performances against bad teams at home as well. Now let’s hope the team can regroup and have a better performance against the New Orleans Pelicans.
