While the battle still goes on for playoff positioning and a possible home court advantage in the first round, the first priority of the season was reached today when the Grizzlies clinched a playoff spot thanks to Utah losing at Dallas.
This is the earliest the Grizzlies have ever clinched a playoff spot. The Grizzlies had never clinched in March prior to this season. With 13 games remaining in the season, the Grizzlies need to win only 4 games to set a franchise high for wins in a season as well. The current record is 50 wins in the Grizzlies first playoff season of 2003-04. That year the Grizzlies won 48 games thru March before sliding into the playoffs as the 6th seed by losing 6 of their final 8 games.
The journey forward won’t be easy as Marc Gasol, the Grizzlies starting center, is sidelined indefinitely with a slight tear of his abdomen. While 3 Shades of Blue has been unable to get a comment from the team, a respected local physician said that an injury such as this could require 4-5 days recovery if not severe but could take months for a more serious rupture. The Grizzlies have stated it is a slight tear but no date for his return has been released.
