According to Ron Tillery of the Commercial Appeal, Rudy Gay’s troubled shoulder will require surgery and he will miss the remainder of the season.
Gay was injured against Philadelphia when Philadelphia rookie Evan Turner chopped across Rudy’s arms trying to prevent him from scoring. The play was not considered a cheap shot but just a bad bit of luck. Gay has been, along with Zach Randolph, leading the Grizzlies in scoring and was being counted on to returnfor the playoff stretch run.
The Grizzlies have survived the loss of Gay so far with Sam Young moving from SG to SF and Tony Allen slipping into the starting lineup. The Grizzlies did acquire Shane Battier at the trade deadline but it wasn’t assumed at the time that he would be a replacement for Rudy as much as a veteran presence off the bench behind Rudy. Now with this news it is unclear if a change in the lineup will occur or not.
Rudy Gay followed a great summer, where he signed a big contract and wona gold medalwith Team USA at the World Championships, with a breakout season setting career highs in assists, steals, blocks, FG%, 3 pt %and FT%. At the time of the injury Rudywas second on the team in scoring at 19.8 ppg but ahd been above 20 ppg for most of the first half of the season.
