Post Whos the Grizzlies Biggest Rival?

With all the excitement of the Grizzlies leading the league at 10-2 I was curious what team is the biggest threat to the Grizzlies winning the Western Conference? That got me thinking that perhaps the biggest threat to the Grizzlies isn't a leading record team (i.e Thunder or Spurs) but simply a team that always give the Grizzlies a tough fight.

That led me to wondering which team fans of the Grizzlies feel is the team's biggest rival. Who do you think it is?

Prior to this season, I would have said Houston, just because we have always struggled against them, but since Lowry and Martin are no longer there, that's no longer the case. Another team is Denver, illustrated by the loss this season.

After the sour taste of last year's playoffs, it's hard for me to say anybody other than the Clippers, though. I can't think of a team in the league that it would feel better to see the Grizz beat.

I think that it is the Spurs, for several reasons. First, the play the most consistent good ball. They don't have long losing streaks, but may have an occasional bad game. They have the experience and talent to win the big games. Their players know how to win and believe that they will win. They have very good outside and inside players. Then they have probably the best coach in the league who gets the most out of his players. San Antonio is the Grizzlies biggest divisional and conference rival.

In terms of being their most heated rival, I think the answer has to be the Thunder. The first game against them this season nearly turning into a physical altercation wasn't an anomaly. It goes back to that 7-game series in the 2011 playoffs when, despite the absence of Rudy Gay, the Grizzlies gave the Thunder all they could handle in what was definitely a tough, gritty series. The Thunder's big men (Ibaka/Perkins/Collison) don't have any issue with mixing it up in the lane, so they don't back down from the beastly duo of Gasol and Z-Bo when we play them. Add in the physicality that guys like Russell Westbrook and Tony Allen add to it, and it's easy to see how tempers tend to flare when these teams meet. I believe these two teams genuinely dislike each other. You don't see the type of nodding to one another pregame or the jovial conversation during the game that you'll see against other teams. The Clippers aren't far down the list either, though.

For a real rival it would have to be San Antonio since we are in the same division and the Spurs always seem to end up on top.

Now if we are talking about teams I have then the Clippers followed by the Thunder and the Heat.

I'm going to go with the Spurs for 4 reasons. The Grizz knocked the Spurs out of the playoffs (as an 8th seed) 2 seasons ago so I know that left a bad taste in their mouth. As minor payback, the Spurs swept the season series last year. Recently, Pop rested his best players against the Heat just to get ready for the Grizzlies game. Lastly, they play in the same division.

Spurs. There have been many great Griz/Spurs games over the years, and now Pop, like every other NBA team and coach, seems to want to mount the bullseye on the Grizzlies' backs.

Were it up to me, it's the Floppers. So many annoying players...and now they've added Matt Barnes. Just went from bad to worse.
