I was on Sports Files with Greg Gaston (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUIEBsiWb_w) in the pre-season. During the show I said that the goal for the season should be focusing on winning the division for the 1st time, not advancing to the Conference or NBA Finals. My opinion wasn't well received by other panelists who felt the playoffs mattered far more than a division win.

My logic was you can't be considered a true competitor for the conference or league title until you can win your division.

Well last night the San Antonio Spurs sent Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green home rather than have them play against the Miami Heat so they would be rested for the Grizzlies on Saturday night. In my opinion it looks like Coach Popovich feels the division crown is more important than a nationally televised game against the defending NBA champs.

What do you think?

As much as I agree with you Chip that a top priority is to win your own division (because the top playoff spots are awarded based on division winners) the fact remains that the first determining factor for a division winner is total wins and not just division games. So, for me smart coaching means playing to win every game and not giving any away.

I would not challenge Pop's coaching as he is one of the best. Plus, this is not something new as he has done it in past years because of his aging players. Except for ZBo, I don't think any of our players fit into the aging category, I don't really think ZBo is close to this.

Winning every game means having good players and a deep enough bench that you can give your starters significance rest during the game. I do wish the Grizzlies had another playable center so that either Marc and Zac wouldn't have to be almost always on the floor. If Darelle finally can play productive minutes again this will help, but he is not a center.

Winning the division is our goal, along with having the best record in the NBA.

I think if you believe Z-Bo is aging then you have to include Tony Allen as well. They are the same age and Tony's had more knee surgeries.
