Post Rumors about Gay, Silence on Hollins

Robert Pera announced to the media today that The team will not comment on any new deal with Lionel Hollins and that the negotiations are to remain quiet and will be Handled byJason Levien.

This is very different from the massive rumor mill being fed from the Grizzlies Front Office just a few weeks ago when they were shopping Rudy Gay.

Who believes this is a positive sign for Hollins remaining with the team, a negative sign or neither but is simply a sign that the Grizz FO guys have learned that leaking to the press isn't always a good thing?

Whether it was before Friday's "mea culpa" pre-game presser or at breakfast this morning, I believe Levien/Pera laid out a series of expectations and goals under which Hollins would be extended. That could be anything from "stop taking public swipes at Hollinger" to "start playing Ed Davis" to "make it to the Western Conference Finals."

When the owner acknowledges that the timing of the trades were unfortunate, but 'if the team as now-constructed gels, they can be the best playoff team Memphis has had' it implies that if the team DOESN'T go further than the 2010 team, (absent singnificant injury) it will be because the team failed "to gel." And I think its reasonable to infer that they'll blame / scapegoat Hollins if that happens.

Now, I didn't see/hear the press conference (I did read the transcript) so its possible I'm missing some context and nuance, but it reads like Hollins has to toe the line, catch lightning in a bottle, and probably a couple of other cliches, or he'll be let go (or, at least, not retained).

Just guessing, but I will not be surprised if Davis gets Arthur's minutes tonight.

I will be surprised if Arthur is relegated down too much but I won't be surprised to see Gasol's minutes decline to the 33-35 range from the 35-40 range he's been playing.

I agree that Hollins is under the microscope. The lack of information about his contract discussions is disturbing to say the least especially after the flood of information about the Grizzlies looking to make trades. Is silence golden right now or not?

I guess Hollins is "under the microscope," but how can you really argue about a guy who has been doing what he does for, what about 12 years, has finally gotten his shot at a head coaching gig and has his team improving consistently year after year, only to stand on the precipice of what could possibly be his biggest breakthrough yet and have it snatched out from under him by a couple of newbies who are new to the business, fairly poor communicators and basically insistent that their (unproven) way is the better way despite Hollins' cards being on the table. Hollins was right to stand up for himself and what he has accomplished. It amazes me that he is still being treated like he's a losing coach and has no idea what he is doing by so many. I'm not saying that he didn't make mistakes, but what he is accomplishing and what he has built over the past 4 years is undeniable. There's no guarantee that Hollins would be rehired anywhere if he was let go from here, but his team has the 5th best record in the League and the 7th best differential. I'm thinking that literally half of the league would love to see him let go so they could get a chance at hiring him.

Hollins was justified in action / reaction... to a point. In the business world -- whether they're competitors, customers, or co-workers -- you run into people all the time who, through a confluence of circumstances, take you down a path that you think isn't correct. But at some point -- preferably a very brief and private pity party -- you've got to move on and play the hand you're dealt. He's a former PG, he should understand something about running the play that's called whether or not he thinks its the "right" or best one.

And he does. I believe the "mea culpa" presser represents his acceptance of the situation and that he has NOT had the chance for his "biggest breakthrough yet" "snatched away." Its just down a differnt path than the one he was planning on going. It would have been better for the team and for Hollins credibility if he had come to that conclusion privately, a couple of days earlier... but that's Hollins.

Hopefully Levien comes to appreciate the passion and keeps him around. It will be sad for Griz fans if he doesn't. But it won't be sad for Hollins because there's about a half-dozen perpetual sub-30 win teams who would LOVE to see him replicate his success for their franchise.

It will actually be a great test of Hollins' ability if and/or when he goes to take the reins at another NBA team. Will he be able to "replicate his success"? Or has this team just been one that happened to mesh well with how he wants the game to be played? Are the Griz a bunch of guys who have responded well to his combination of tutelage and, ahem, "tough love", or could he go into any locker room and turn it into a defensive juggernaut (the Kings, methinks, would be the toughest test)?

As long as TA, Marc, and Conley are here, I think Hollins needs to stay. Those three are the ones who most closely emulate Hollins' "ideal player", IMO.

I just can't wrap my head around the "happened to mesh" scenario. Consider:

Z-Bo: Black hole / bad teammate --> passing, defending all-star and beloved member of the community
Conley: over-matched draft day bust who can't shoot --> skilled, pass-first PG with 3PT range & league-leader in steals.
Gasol: Pau's fat baby brother --> arguably the most complete C in the NBA
Allen: offense so bad that you can't afford to put him on the court --> elite wing defender who knows & embraces his role.
Pondexter: 12th man --> solid rotation player with bankable defensive and 3pt skills.
Speights: 12th man on losing team --> starter on winning team --> solid rotation player with 10yr career ahead of him.
Cunningham: 12th man --> solid rotation player.
Early signs of career resurection for Bayless, Ellington, and now Daye.

Now, certainly, some of those things would have happened no matter who was coaching. But there has been, almost literally no one on the Griz roster the past 3 years who isn't a better player today than they were before they arrived in Memphis. That's Hollins. And developing talent -- with particular emphasis on bargain-contract reclamation projects -- is a skill-set that will become even-more in demand as the fiscal realities of the new CBA kick in.
