Post Mayo to Dallas, Memphis Gets Nothing

O J Mayo's sometimes sensational, sometimes terrible, career with the Grizzlies came to an end last night when he signed a contract with the Mavericks.

Is this a good or bad thing for the Grizzlies?

It will be fine, Bayless, Selby and Wroten will be able to replace him and then some.

So you aren't concerned that the Grizzlies bench won't have enough scoring punch?

It isn't like O.J. had that much punch to begin with. Bayless and Selby can equal that scoring punch, plus we have D.A. and Speights, two quality bigs who can score and spread the floor. We will be more well rounded, I believe.

Mayo never accepted the role of being a scorer off the bench. He still sees himself as a PG in the NBA. I wonder if he'll accept that role in Dallas?

Anyway, I like Bayless' scoring ability. He's finally maturing into the role of a scoring PG in the league but the team needs more shooting at the two guard. Selby is tearing up the Summer League but that doesn't mean he'll be able to do the same this season.

I think with Mayo it was more about being a starter than a PG. His feelings/pride were hurt by the fact Hollins saw Allen and Conley as better fits for his system. If the Mavs do keep him as the starting SG, I think he will be fine if he is getting "his minutes."

I think people are really undervaluing Bayless, as well as Selby's defensive energy in Summer League. He looks like he finally gets it....if he can be a decent defender, he and Bayless with QPON, Arthur and Speights is a darn solid 2nd group.

I agree on overvaluing the summer league. Selby is scoring well...but against NBA level talent, he won't have the same windows. If he can get 8-12 minutes and average 6 or 7, with Bayless getting 10 or 11 points in 17-19 minutes, that already is Mayo's production last season and then some.

That's a nice theory but it doesn't jive with the facts. Mayo demanded to play PG after his first season, bombed in summer league, was cut from the US National team, came to camp still insisting to play PG, heard Hollins say on Media Day that he wasn't a PG and retorted that "you have to overcome criticism." He was still the starting SG during this entire time.

After he started so poorly and the bench was terrible he was made the 6th man. His unhappiness stems from not playing the point not coming off the bench. Once Mayo understands what most NBA execs already do he will be a very good scoring punch for a team.

Fair enough...well if you are correct then he will be just as angry in Dallas, because he is the starting SG there, according to their FO. He is not worth the headache, IMO. We have guys now who will 1. buy into the system and 2. compliment each other better.

In watching O.J., I don't understand the PG passion. If he committed to being a Marcus Thornton type SG, he could make the 8-9 million a year he wants.

Mayo to Dallas was good. With DA and Zach back healthy, I think that we simply change the scoring distribution in the second unit to either DA or Speights. With Bayless on the team too, I think we will be OK. This is not even considering that Selby is probably going to have a breakout year this year.

I think Mayo needed a new start so I am happy for him. I love the Grizzlies off-season however. Bayless can easily replace Mayo and Selby, Wroten and Ellington should have an interesting battle for back up minutes as well.

Throw in the local owners stepping up to join Pera's bid and Memphis fans have to be ecstatic about this summer!
