The trade of Rudy Gay had a lot of fans upset thinking that the Grizzlies weren't trying to win this season. Now the team has matched the 8 game winning streak that the pre-trade team set. Are the Grizzlies a better team today that they were before the trades?

Well they beat Brooklyn at their house and Golden State here in Memphis not to mention defeating O J Mayo and the Mavs in an incredible 25 point comeback.

GS sux right now. They keep losing so thats not a good win. The Nets are a .500 team lately which is decent but not good.

I suppose to game tonight will tell us a lot more than the other games have.

To some extent, but I'm not sure I would go as far as to write this run off, if the Heat hypothetically blow us out tonight. Is the 8 game streak inflated by the opposition, yeah, but there are plenty of good teams that have played stretches of schedule like this and not come out with 8 straight W's.

I do think that this team is better now, and here's why. The coaching staff has essentially been pushed to "coach better" without Gay on the roster. Much more than before, we're seeing players moving around off the ball on offense. Assist rates for February are for the most part higher than those of any other month, along with effective field goal percentage, which I do not think is a coincidence. Lastly, Austin Daye and Ed Davis. Two sore needs of this team were a shooter and an above the rim shotblocker. Viola! At this point, Daye instantly looks like the best shooter on the team, while Davis has the ups, length, and motor to alter shots unlike anybody outside of Marc Gasol.

My one pet peeve of this group is similar to that of the team prior with Rudy: the love affair with the long two. I'm not saying we need to shoot more 3's, but for crying out loud. Tayshaun seems to only set up a step inside the arc and Bayless sticks that right foot on the line for just about every long range shot he takes.

Is this team better than the one before the trades? I guess the question is "how much before the trades?" The February Griz are better than the December and January Griz, but not as good as the November Griz. The team's schedule during the winning streak has been soft, but ball movement and well-executed team defense aren't really dependant on the opponent and that, moreso than the record, is why I'd say the February Griz are better. Hopefully the March-June (JUNE!) Griz can top the team from November.

Speaking of which... Sacramento cut Aaron Brooks today. He's a shoot-first PG which Memphis doesn't really need. But I'd STRONGLY prefer him over Bayless and Wroten as the starting PG for a game or three in April-May if Mike Conley were to get hurt. Any chance the Griz can rent a dependable backup PG for the rest of the season?

I wrote my comments about Aaron Brooks before the MIA game. I feel even more strongly now. The second unit looked completely lost against a good MIA D starting the 4th Qtr. Took some great shots to keep the game from slipping away and being a playmaker for more than 1-2 possessions handcuffs Bayless.

As great as Bayless has been when utilized as a scorer, I have to echo the sentiment, Chris. I'm not entirely sure Aaron Brooks would be the answer, but neither is anyone on the current roster. I'm just afraid we'd see the same issues with Brooks as we are right now. And I think it's clear that Bayless just ain't a "Hollins point guard." He could be an effective point in some more free-flowing offenses, but the dude is terrible fit for the role in ours.

Aaron Brooks just said he has a verbal commitment to sign with Houston this summer.
