And now, a quick break from the Shane/Thabeet/No OJ Mayo trade hysteria:The Cleveland Cavaliers have put PF Leon Powe on waivers.
For those of you who missed it, the failed OJ Mayo trade was designed to bring in Josh McRoberts, a 6-10 power forward, to bolster our frontcourt. Both the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks are said to be interested in Powe, who gave the Celtics a boost in their run to the 2008 NBA Championship. A comparison:
The salaries are comparable and the contracts expire this year. McRoberts is taller, produces more in more minutes on a better team, but he’s a rookie. Leon Powe is shorter, but is energetic and playoff tested, hard nosed and a veteran.
My vote: Snap up Powe off of waivers, before the Celtics, Knicks or someone else. If we were willing to eat McRoberts contract for the rest of the season, we can eat Powe’s. I think he could contribute, while providing some insurance at PF.
Unless someone else has a better idea for a backup PF/Center . . . .
