The facts are still cloudy but it appears the Grizzlies have pulled two trades today.
First the Grizzlies have sent Hasheem Thabeet and a future lottery protected #1 pick to Houston for former Grizzlies fan favorite Shane Battier. In alast second moveO J Mayo wastraded to Indianapolis for Josh McRoberts and Indy’s #1 pick as well. The #1 draft pick traded to the Rockets could not be traded by the Grizzlies until 2014 at the earliest since the Grizzlies already owe a lottery protected #1 pick to Utah in the Ronnie Brewer deal last deal.
“Part of the NBA is trying to manage your personnel and O J has always been someone I thought highly of,” Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley said to the press. “It is with deep regret that I think we need to bring another power forward in. We’re overloaded at the 2/3 postion (with that acquisition of Battier). I think it’s probably best for the Grizzlies and best for O J that he’ll get to play for a team where he can get a lot more minutes.”
Indiana’s need for a player like Mayo was made larger when Mike Dunleavy broke his thumb. The timetablefor his return to the Pacers is unknownat this time.
Shane Battier is capable of filling in for Rudy Gay during his injury rehab and would allow Rudy a slower re-introduction to the lineup when he returns. Both Battier and McRoberts, a 6-9 PF from Duke, are expiring contracts making it more likely the Grizzlies will hold onto the core free agents Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph for next year.
Late News: Mayo’s trade to Indy is being declined due to the paperwork getting in to late.
