The Memphis Grizzlies would lose to the Minnesota Timberwolves 101-93. Sunday’s loss was the ninth at FedEx Forum this season, equaling the number of games the Grizzlies lost all of last season. And to rub salt in the wound to Grizzlies fans, Mike Conley left in the fourth quarter with a left thigh contusion.
I believe Tom Cruise said it best in A Few Good Men, the hits just keep on coming.
The result of this Grizzlies loss would once again come to bad pick and rolls and not being able to defend the 3-point line. The Timberwolves would shoot 12-of-26 from 3-point range. Four of those 3-pointers would come from Kevin Love.
“Our defense has got to get better. We should have to come out with more energy,” Zach Randolph said on team’s performance.
Another problem for this Grizzlies team was they were passing up way too many open shots. And Coach Dave Joerger can’t figure out why his team keeps doing it.
“I have no idea. We encourage it, we practice it,” Joerger said on teams passing up shots.
This loss snaps Memphis 11-game winning streak against Minnesota, which was tied for the longest winning streak against a single opponent in franchise history.
“I can’t remember winning here. It’s been a long time, if ever, that we have won in Memphis. It is a very tough place to play. Last time was in the first two months of my career, that’s wild,” Love said on the winning in Memphis for the first time since 2009.
With going through losing streaks like this at home it seems that a lack of energy comes out early in games and is this team becoming frustrated.
“I don’t think its frustration; it’s all about getting it together and practice. We just have to keep sticking to the things that pretty much gained our notoriety. We just have to get back to it,” Tony said on the team’s frustration level “Obviously, some days are better than others but you can’t get down. You just have to get up.”
So basically Tony Allen is saying that this team needs to work even harder and find that energy and Grit and Grind style of basketball those Grizzlies fans have fallen in love with over the past couple of years.
One of the guys that bring that energy every game so far this year is Conley. He led the Grizzlies in scoring with 28 points (12-of-20). He reached the 20-point mark for the eighth time this season and for the second time in his past three games he also drained four three-pointers, tying his season high.
Grizzlies fans need to make sure to say many prayers over the next couple of days for Mike Conley because he is the last person that needs to be injured on this team. Conley is the floor general on the offensive side and creates so much energy for the team.
I remember telling fans to not to panic yet but if Conley’s injury is very serious…you have my permission to hit that panic button. You can also start preparing for the NBA Draft Lottery because many fans already believe that scenario as well.
