As the rivalry between the Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers continues, the Clippers get the upper hand tonight and the victory 101-81. The Clippers now lead the all-time series against Memphis 36-35.
What looked to be a promising game at halftime as the Grizzlies would take the lead 42-40. The second half did not live up to the hype. The Grizzlies would only score 39 points in the second half to the Clippers 61. Tony Allen would not play tonight due to a hip injury.
“In the second half they started hitting shots. Jamal Crawford was hitting shots. Jared Dudley was hitting shots. Their bench players were coming off the bench and hitting shots. That team has a lot of good players. They have a lot of good bench players that could be starting”, Zach Randolph said after the game.
Memphis shot a season low .377 (29-of-77 FG) from the field tonight. It looked like where they had the shots set up on offense but just failed to execute.
“I thought we missed a lot of shots. I thought we needed to get a better start. I thought we missed a lot of shots early, and I thought we didn’t capitalize”, Coach Dave Joerger said on the second half offense.
One of the Grizzlies key players Ed Davis would leave the game in the first half with a left ankle sprain. It is a day-to-day and will get treatment on Friday. Davis was getting into a rhythm tonight and having his way with the Clippers until the injury.
“We needed athleticism and he’s our best athlete”, Joerger said on Davis.
This was a very physical and emotional match-up for the Grizzlies and the tank started to become empty in the second half. Players such as Jon Leuer and Kosta Koufos were getting man handled in the paint and not so many foul calls by officials.
Blake Griffin would finish the night with 10 points and 14 rebounds and continued to be the biggest heel in the city of Memphis. He would cause frustration once again to the Memphis players as he caused Koufos and Jerryd Bayless to get technical and flagrant fouls on Griffin by shoving him on different occasions.
The flopping still continues for Mr. Griffin.
Fellow writer for 3 Shades of Blue writer Jonathan May recalls seeing Griffin pretending to throw his towel to a fan but instead dropped it on the ground and walked away. Chris Paul would give his jersey to a Clippers fan after the game.
Key players for the Grizzlies included Mike Conley, Quincy Pondexter, and Kosta Koufos. Coney only having eight shots contributed 16 points with four assists. Pondexter had 15 points and a season high 5 assists and 3 steals. Koufos had 17 points and 9 rebounds.
It’s obvious to say frustration played a well in the game for Grizzlies. No calls led to frustration in Joerger as well as he got a technical foul in the game.
Injuries continue to be problem for the Grizzlies. Fans hope that Allen will be ready to go, Randolph is healthy, and Davis is back for Saturday against the Golden State Warriors. The Grizzlies can’t afford any more injuries with this team.
“Losing injuries has been tough. At the same time, Jon Leuer has been playing great. Zach Randolph is coming back. We just have to keep stepping up and taking care of one another”, Koufos said on the team injuries.
Koufos mentioned after the game that you can’t let a loss like this get to you and turn the page. They move on and hopefully they have a better result against the Warriors. Everyone be safe this weekend with the #IcePocalypse. Believe Memphis.
