According to the Tehran Times Hamed Haddadi is likely going toextend his contractwith the Memphis Grizzlies this summer rather than test free agency next summer or return to Europe to play.
Haddadi is back in Iran currently resting after the long NBA season and preparing to represent his home country at the 2010 World Championships this summer. Haddadi will join Marc Gasol (Spain) and possibly Rudy Gay and O J Mayo in the tournament. The World Championshipis a major tournament for international players who take great pride in representing their country.
The news of Haddadi’s intention to extend is somewhat surprising since Haddadi seems trapped behind Gasol and Hasheem Thabeet for playing time with the Grizzlies and would likely have been offered more money to play in Spain or Italy instead. Haddadi may have drawn interest with other NBA teams as a free agent after next season as his size, rebounding and shot blocking skills would be desired by many teams looking for size in their lineup.
Attempts to reach the Grizzlies front office for comment on this story were unsuccessful but we hope to have a statement soon.
