Well the final votes are in and, as expected, former Tiger Point Guard Derrick Rose beat out Grizzlies Combo Guard O J Mayo for the Rookie of the Year award. Rose got the nod over Mayo for his ability to return to the Chicago Bulls to the playoffs as well as leading all rookies in assists and being second in scoring at 16.8 ppg. Mayo led all rookies in scoring at 18.6 ppg and minutes played.
“When I first came into the season, my biggest thing was to get this award,” Rose said. “I was telling you all that I didn’t care, but I did. You really do want this award. There was a lot of talent out there that I had to go against.”
The battle of the big name Memphis guards wasn’t really that close either. Rose received 574 total points and all but one first place vote while Mayo receivedfive first place votes and246 total points. Brook Lopez was third in the voting with 127 points. Grizzlies Center Mark Gasol finished a somewhat surprising 8th place with one second place vote and one third place vote from the media.
