11 Games Left – Grizzlies stuck in 7th place?
In the Western Conference standings and playoff position, we know the top 3 teams. The rest are slugging it out all the way down to the 8th spot with 4 teams hoping to claim the last spot.
I don’t want to say or believe that Memphis is stuck in 7th place, but it seems that’s how it will end. Of the 11 games the Grizzlies have left, 5 are against +500 teams, 2 against the Spurs, 1 against the Thunder and 1 against the Warriors. Even to win 2 of those games, based on their current play, the Grizzlies will be doing well. They need to beat OKC in order to spit the season series with them in case of identical records at the end of the season. Then it goes to division record and then conference record to determine tie breakers.
It seems there is still a race for 4th because Utah has a more difficult last 10 games than the Clippers. Can Portland or Dallas catch Denver for the 8th spot. The March 28th game of Denver vs. Portland will have a lot to say about that. I doubt the Mavs have a chance nor do the Pelicans of ending in the 8th spot. But, I guess if New Orleans plays as well against others as they did against the Grizzlies, it is possible for them to climb the ladder.
According to NBA rules, home court (an important factor in where a team finishes) will be decided according to record and tie breakers. Link to Playoff match-ups on ESPN with tie breaker rules at bottom of page.
