My Takeaways:
Grizzlies played the aggressor from the beginning and took it right at Lopez & Aldridge. Gasol had 10 first quarter points and ended the game with 19. This is now 10 straight games Gasol has scored in double figures. The Grizzlies are 7-3 in those games. 8 of which were against current playoff teams.
#2: This marks the 5th consecutive win where ZBO, Conley & Gasol all scored in double figures. This season in Grizzlies wins, these three are averaging 18.6, 16.7 and 13.9 ppg respectively and are a combined +17. When these 3 are all playing at a high level, this team is tough to beat. Only 2 losses have come when all three of these guys scored in double figures and that was at Charlotte and against the Pelicans at home. Both games were lost by 3 points.
#3: Coach Joerger shortened his rotation to 9 guys tonight against the Blazers. After the game he said it was because he didn’t see a matchup he liked for Jon Leuer. Playing a playoff team, one with multiple scoring weapons on the perimeter didn’t demand or call for additional help inside. Marc, ZBO & Koufos handled themselves well, even though they gave up 16 offensive rebounds. Portland missed 20 shots in the paint, however and were 6/12 on second chance opportunities.
#4: The Grizzlies are now percentage points ahead of Dallas for the 7th spot. Dallas and Phoenix both have one more loss than the Grizzlies do. A 3-0 road trip would help the Grizzlies maintain that advantage over Dallas and Phoenix and keep them in the driver’s seat for the higher seed, 6th being the optimal one.
#5: Tayshaun Prince had a sneaky good game. He was 4-6 from the field for 9 points and played solid defense. He has put up some goose eggs, but for the 20min or so a game he is playing, he hasn’t done more harm than good. His leadership off the court from the bench is valuable as well.
